NOTICE OF RACE HYDROFOIL WANAKA 15th – 17th January 2018
HYDROFOIL WANAKA is a kite hydrofoil racing regatta hosted by the Wanaka Yacht Club in conjunction with the New Zealand Kite Racing Association. It will be run from Monday 15th January – Wednesday 17th January 2018 on Lake Wanaka, Otago, South Island, New Zealand.
ENTRANTS Entry is open to New Zealand and International Kite Hydrofoilers. New Zealand entrants must be a 2018 financial member of the NZKRA. International competitors must be a current member of their countries kite racing association affiliated to the IKA. Hydrofoilers new to racing are encouraged to enter as this is a great opportunity to learn and experience the thrill of kite foil racing.
RACE PLAN The plan is have two days with 6 races each day and one day with 3 races and a distance race around Mou Tapu of approximately 12nm. Course lengths will be set so the winner should finish with a target time of 10 minutes. Maximum race time is 24 minutes. Each race start will be 30 minutes apart. There will be a half hour break after 3 races. The windward leg will be approximately 0.9nm. The course will comprise of windward leeward legs. Starting to windward and either finishing off the start boat or a boat located near the Wanaka Beach shore. Course details will be finalized in the Sailing Instructions.
BASE AND HEADQUARTERS The headquarters will be the Wanaka Yacht Club, Lakeside Road, Wanaka.
ENTRY FEE The entry fee for the event is NZD $150. Entries to be completed on line at the New Zealand Kite Racing Association web site http://www.nzkra.nz before 10th January 2018 at 11pm. Late entries will be accepted at registration providing the contestant has notified Richard Bates by email richardmbates@gmail.com or text +64 21 888271 before Friday 12th January 2018.
EQUIPMENT Competitors may use any hydrofoil (does not need to be IKA registered). Competitors may use foil or LEI kites (do not need to be IKA registered). The event is not open to non kite powered foiling or non foiling craft.
REGISTRATION Registration will be at the Wanaka Yacht Club at 10am Monday 15th January 2018
BRIEFING Briefing will be at the Wanaka Yacht Club at 11am, Monday 15th January 2018. RACING Racing will start at 1pm, Monday 15th January 2018. In the event of unsuitable wind in Roy’s Bay other locations on Lake Wanaka or Lake Hawea may be used. The latest start time will be 5pm on the 15th and 16th January and 4pm on the 17th January.
SAILING INSTRUCTIONS These will be available on the NZKRA web site and at the Wanaka Yacht Club prior to the commencement of the regatta.
LAUNCHING This is wind direction dependant. If the prevailing North West wind is blowing the plan will be to launch from the Wanaka Beach front.
SAFETY Each contestant must wear a wetsuit and a NZYF approved lifevest. There will be safety boats able to rescue disabled foilers but contestants should be adequately clad in the case of an hour long swim. The Lake can be cold. Helmets are strongly recommended but not compulsory.
RULES Hydrofoil Wanaka will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2017 – 2020 including appendix F as modified by the Sailing Instructions.
SCORING The low points scoring system will be used with double points for the distance race.
RACE BIBS These will be loaned to competitors for the regatta and must be returned after the last race to a NZKRA organising member. Richard Bates, Joshua McCormack, Sam Bullock or Michael Pepper.
PRIZES Prizes will be provided for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placegetters in the following categories. Youth – Under 20 on 17th January 2017 Female Grand Master – Over 45 on the 15th January 2017 Open – All contestants
